Renovation and Alterations to a Grade II Listed Former Georgian Rectory

Lilly Lewarne were commissioned in 2017 to provide architectural services in the renovation of a Grade II former Georgian rectory in a rural location in Cornwall. This Grade II property was set within its own picturesque setting yet sadly retained few of its historic internal features, much having been lost in late 20th century renovation works. Our client was clear that they wanted to retain the historic fabric that remained whilst incorporating these remaining features in to a sensitive renovation of the entire building to suit their present needs and aspirations.
The commission comprised the overall design, procurement of planning and Listed Building consents, technical design and administration of the construction contract through to completion.
The initial design was developed, in close dialogue with the clients, and as a result of a full appraisal of the existing fabric of the building. Any remaining historic features were recorded and scheduled and opportunities for intervention identified. This scheme was developed and Listed Building Consents obtained. Lilly Lewarne worked alongside the client’s interior designers to co-ordinate the interface between the internal décor and the often complex technical constraints engendered through the renovation and alteration of such historic fabric. During the construction phase Lilly Lewarne monitored site progress and worked closely with the specialist building contractor to maintain the client’s vision and manage budget and performance. Lilly Lewarne were on hand to assist in the resolution of the numerous technical challenges and surprises that can arise during the updating of historic buildings and were able to draw upon other local consultants and expertise as required. It was a pleasure to be involved in such a sensitive renovation project and feel that the quality of the completed renovation works are a credit to the steadfast team effort maintained by the client, design team and contractor, in both sharing and realising the client’s original aspiration to breathe new life into such a special place.
